Signorelli's banner and its frame for the Confraternity of St Anthony Abbot in Sansepolcro

  • An analysis of the double-sided banner by Luca Signorelli that has recently been returned to its original place on the high altar of the church of S. Antonio in Borgo Sansepolcro, Italy, as well as its original wooden frame, which has hitherto been neglected. The banner, which was commissioned by the Confraternity of St Anthony Abbot, is known to have been executed around 1505–06. As well as describing the iconographic program of the banner and presenting its original frame, this article reviews known documentation of the piece, adding some previously unpublished references to the scholarship surrounding it.
