  • Resumen
    • A review of a new catalog of French porcelain in the Royal Collection, by Geoffrey de Bellaigue. This three-volume catalog is breathtaking in its extent, largely describing the collection of George IV, justifiably considered the greatest ever collector of Sèvres porcelain. Aiming to highlight the individuality of the collection and to present it in its historical context, De Bellaigue achieves these aims by wisely restricting his entries specifically to the item under discussion, rather than to too great a generic discussion of such areas as the history of the form. This Sèvres catalog cannot be matched, not just because the size and scope of the Royal Collection has been unsurpassed for 180 years, nor because the sheer beauty of the publication is unrivaled, but because it brings together the expertise of a lifetime, with practical, instructive, and enduring scholarship based on an understanding of objects and archives within the context of history.
