  • Resumen
    • The writer examines new documents that shed light on the circumstances of the production of Gentile da Fabriano's 15th-century painting Madonna dei banchetti, which was destroyed over 200 years ago. The artist was commissioned to paint this picture for the facade of the palace of the Università dei Giudici e Notai, or Notaries' Guild, in Siena, Italy, at the height of his career, just after painting the Adoration of the Magi for Palla Strozzi's chapel in S. Trinita, Florence, in 1423. This article publishes new documents that have come to light, which, adding to the contradictory information supplied by Tommaso Fecini's contemporary Cronaca and by Sigismondo Tizio in his 16th-century Historiae senenses, allow the history of the painting to be clarified, provide a precise date for its execution of 1424, and show that the project was overseen by the sculptor Jacopo della Quercia.
