With reference to a previously unknown and unidentified inventory in the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv, Vienna, the writers argue that it documents the collection assembled by 18th-century collector Heinrich Franz Xavier Wiser of the Palatinate and Neuburg. Baron Wiser's name is not entirely unknown in the history of art, his role as an intermediary and purchaser of works of art on behalf of Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine, being referred to in several sources. However, purchasing on behalf of his patron and adding to his own collection evidently ran in parallel. The writers go on to examine the inventory in detail and identify some of the works in the collection, concluding that while there is still much to learn about his collection, Wiser can already take his rightful place in the rich history of 17th- and 18th-century art collecting and patronage.
