Resumen de 'Dans un café', 'Zigzags' and five recovered Impressionist drawings

Richard Kendall

  • The journal Zigzags à la plume à travers l'art sheds new light on the considerable impact that Degas's major painting Dans un cafe%́ had on Impressionism and on the development of early modernism as a whole. Dans un café was not shown at any of the Impressionist displays or at other venues in France before the early 20th century. Indeed, scholars have confirmed its near-seclusion in an English provincial collection soon after completion. The issue then arises as to how it was seen by Degas's contemporaries. Zigzags à la plume à travers l'art was published between April and September 1876. The issue of May 7, 1876, featured an illustrated version of Dans un café, along with other Impressionist works. It is highly probable that the illustration was made by Degas himself. Though a far-from-perfect reproduction, it would have been the sole available image of the painting that remained in the public forum in France.
