Resumen de The provenance of Rembrandt's 'Polish nobleman' (1637) in the National Gallery of Art, Washington

Catherine Phillips

  • An article tracing the provenance of A Polish nobleman (1637), a fine work by Rembrandt. In 1765, the painting was acquired in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, for Count Johann Carl (Charles) Philipp Cobenzl (1712–70), Plenipotentiary Minister in the Austrian Netherlands of the Archduchess and Empress Maria Teresa. It spent just three years in his collection, as—in 1768—Cobenzl's works of art were sold almost in their entirety to Catherine the Great of Russia. The piece was removed in 1930 from the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, by the Soviet state, and has resided in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., since 1937.
