    Pese a haber establecido relaciones diplomáticas poco después del nacimiento de Pakistán, en los años cincuenta, las relaciones bilaterales entre España y Pakistán fueron durante décadas casi exclusivamente formales, sin apenas contenido real. No ha sido hasta la década de los 2000 cuando, por una serie de circunstancias concurrentes, estas relaciones han comenzado a dotarse de pleno contenido. Ha contribuido especialmente a esta transformación el radical cambio en la escena internacional que protagonizó Pakistán a lo largo de esa década, tras los atentados del 11 de septiembre y el inicio del conflicto en Afganistán, pero no es menos cierto que también se han desarrollado las relaciones por cuestiones estrictamente bilaterales, especialmente por la llegada de un buen número de ciudadanos pakistaníes a España.

    Spain and Pakistan established formal diplomatic relations shortly after the Partition and birth of the Pakistani State. Nevertheless, for a long time such relations remained purely formal, with hardly any real content or substance. It was not until the years 2000 when, for a number of different reasons, the bilateral relations between Spain and Pakistan began to flourish. This was partly due to the influence of the events that sadly turned Pakistan the center of the world’s worries, but also due to specifically bilateral reasons, in particular the increase in the number of Pakistani nationals migrating to Spain.
