Pepe Karmel comments on Ariel Dorfman's play Picasso's Closet. Dorfman's play tends to present a caricature of Picasso, and it is distressingly revealing of the place of art in modern culture. Dorfman shows us the mythical Picasso, and he equates Picasso's artistic goals with his behavior towards women: he makes no attempt to illuminate Picasso's art or his process of art making. Furthermore, Dorfman's dissection of Picasso's sexual psychology is less significant than the play's focus on the resentment toward modern art experienced by much of its public.
