  • Resumen
    • Partha Mitter replies to four commentaries, all published in this issue, on his article “Decentering Modernism: Art History and Avant-Garde from the Periphery,” also in this issue. This article was intended to provoke debate on “modernism and its discontents,” one of the key concerns of contemporary art history. In the process, it suggested a more critical and open-ended global art history for the 21st century. It is gratifying that the respondents to the article generally agree with the objective of “decentering” the discourse of modernism, even though they may approach the issue from slightly different perspectives. By putting forth exciting new prescriptions for recasting art history, the respondents have further enhanced thought on the subject. It is hoped that the central problematic of this intervention will generate more debate among art historians and thereby come closer to a true critical global art history for the 21st century.
