The writer replies to discussions of his article, appearing in this issue, on the role of mediation in an artwork, specifically in the painting A Solitary Temple below Brightening Peaks (Qingluan xiaosi). He explains the role of phenomenology and systems theory in his discussion of the mediations of an artwork. Among the other issues he addresses are his focus on theoretical parameters in the interpretation of the painting, the significance of the Chinese artistic past in explanations of the painting, and the expansion of modern art history beyond its Euro-American beginnings.
