Resumen de Money, power, contemporary art

Martha Rosler

  • Part of a special section on money, power, and the history of art. The writer asks what lies outside the high art world, which for her includes the institutions; the critics, reviewers, and historians and their publications; the connoisseurs and collectors; and the artists. She finds that the insularity of this world from the rest of culture is less than it is often proclaimed to be. She states that for those artists in the high art world who are always dreaming of reaching wide audiences directly and for those who dream of escaping the soul-bending or work-distorting constraints of marketplace and academe, it is all too apparent that there is, at present, no “outside.”
