  • Resumen
    • Part of a special section on money, power, and the history of art. The writer addresses the coincidence of rising out-of-pocket expenses for authors of scholarly books on 20th-century art and diminished or changing funding opportunities available to publishers of art books. Because the concept of fair use hardly exists with regard to visual imagery, most university press contracts name the author as the party responsible for gathering and paying for the acquisition of photos and reproduction rights. Since the cost of clearing rights usually outweighs what the author earns from the sale of the books, these bills will most likely come out of the author's own pocket. Although picture rights are just one factor in what makes art book publishing such an expensive venture, they may be the last straw when it comes to university presses deciding which studies to publish and which to pass over.
