  • Part of a special section on money, power, and the history of art. The writer argues that the profession of art history is being marginalized to the extent that the small presence it retains in the bustling world outside academic conferences and specialized publications is under threat. He pleads for a diversity that will enable it to escape determination by the peculiar characteristics of academia and learn to create histories of art that share the experiences of people in the wider world. He contends that examining artists as entrepreneurs of culture may help the profession better understand how art carries meaning and why so many people care.
