  • Resumen
    • Part of a symposium providing a range of critical perspectives on rethinking the art historical canon. The recent investigation in art and architectural history of “rethinking the canon” is closely connected to the current focus on sociocultural intersections of the “Western” and “non-Western” worlds. Considering art and architecture within the widened parameters of intricate power relations has meant a reframing and rereading of the canon, resulting in additional ways of seeing and understanding works of art and architecture. Two case studies representing the fruits of introducing new viewpoints—colonialism and orientalism—into the canon are provided. The first concerns an 1830s urban design intervention in the city of Algiers, and the second concerns the thematic repertory of Osman Hamdi, an Ottoman artist working at the turn of the 20th century.
