  • Resumen
    • Part of a symposium on interdisciplinarity. The writer discusses interdisciplinary approaches to art history. Such approaches to artworks, she observes, involve the risk of embracing a viewpoint that prizes speculation, overdetermination, and attention to private feelings. Focusing on the psychoanalytic approach, she finds that it is alert for discontinuities, gaps, and slips, searching for conflict hidden in overlooked, quickly rationalized details; for the secret spread of inner turmoil in shape, line, and color across a canvas; and for the betrayal of aspects of mental life that are out of awareness or maybe even out of control. She concludes that it is through permitting ourselves to take the risks of different ways of seeing that we enrich the discipline of art history and expand those quiet moments we have as individuals with works we love.
