Contemporary book art in the Middle East is manifold. After briefl y situating it in contemporary art in the Middle East, this essay focuses on the book as document in Iraq. A notion borrowed from Johanna Drucker’s The Century of Artists’ Books (New York, 2004), the book as document acquires a meaning of its own, once adapted to the Middle East. Not giving personal statements but testimonies of the nation, it steps into the void left by war and occupation in Iraq. As the essay argues, contemporary book art in Iraq is marked by this political urgency. It draws inspiration from the Arabic- Islamic heritage but is part and parcel of contemporary artistic practices.
