The article examines representations of vision and blindness in British and U.S. visual art and images connected to World War I. The author begins with an examination of recruitment and propaganda posters, with emphasis given to the ways in which authority was projected in such images. Paintings by U.S. artist John Singer Sargent are given a large amount of attention in the article. The ways in which various posters utilized an indoor/outdoor dichotomy, window symbolism, and domestic interiors as recruitment tools are also detailed.
