    • The essay examines the architectural design, art collections, and construction of the mansion of railroad financier Henry G. Marquand. The author explains Marquand's collection of both English and U.S. art and the incorporation of such art into the mansion's interior design. Emphasis is given to Marquand's efforts in collecting historical art made by such painters as Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Frederic Leighton, and Edward Poynter, as well as his commissioning of contemporary English furniture.
