  • The essay discusses the English influence on the artwork of American painter Benjamin West. The author applies the symptomatic analysis developed by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in his examination of the work. The ways in which such an analysis can provide insights into West's Anglo-American identity during an era when “American” and “English” had increasingly divergent meanings are explained.
