  • The essay examines Dutch still-life paintings produced in the Netherland Indies during its period of Dutch colonization. Therefore, the author is broadly concerned with the relationship between colonialism, trade, and art. More specifically, the author engages with Dutch notions pertaining to climate and societal advancement, explaining how such ideas came through in still life paintings.
