  • The writer discusses the role of left and right in narrative paintings against the background of the complex relationship between image and text in descriptions of pictures. Topics addressed include description as a staging of pictorial space, narrative structures in painting, mirror images and representation, the interpretation of symbols and anthropology, and the reproduction of paintings through contour drawings.
