  • The writer approaches Ambrogio Lorenzetti's fresco Martyrdom of the Franciscans in San Francesco, Siena, Italy, as a case study for the socio-historical context of mendicant art during the second quarter of the 14th century. In addition to a greater nderstanding of the genesis and logic that created the monument, she offers new evidence for Ambrogio's chronology, his relationship with patrons, and their contemporary concerns. She also provides new documentation relating to European and Asian exchange and to the changing patterns of Franciscan ideology and visual propaganda.
