  • The writer discusses a self-portrait by Anthonie van Dyk in the Duke of Westminster's collection. The oil painting, traditionally dated to 1632–33, shows the artist beside a splendid sunflower and wearing a gold chain like one presented to him by King Charles I, who ennobled him in 1632. The richly allusive work, which was designed to promote van Dyk's work by appealing to his educated aristocratic patrons, likens the artist to a sun on the firmament of art.
