Resumen de The Figure of the Backfisch: Representing Puberty in Wilhelmine Germany

David Ehrenpreis

  • The figure of the Backfisch, or female adolescent, a symbol of puberty in Wilhelmine Germany, appeared repeatedly in both popular culture and the work of the avant-garde and came to represent contesting visions of society. The writer explores the rustic origins of the Backfisch in official art and the popular press, analyzes her transformation in the metropolis and her appropriation by the avant-garde, and shows how images of the Backfisch articulated shifting conceptions of sexuality and illustrated a demand for legibility in an age of burgeoning mass culture.
