  • Resumen
    • The annexation of Cyprus by Venice, Italy, in 1489 provides the key to the decoration of two of the four fireplaces commissioned from the Lombardo workshop for the apartment of the then Doge, Agostino Barbarigo, in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice in the late 15th century. The successful outcome of the Ferrarese war had consolidated the extraordinary growth of Venice's land empire during the first two decades of the 15th century, and in the 1480s it was noted that the city was healthier and happier than for many previous years thanks to the careful and diligent management of Barbarigo's predecessor, his brother Marco. The writer goes on to examine the many reasons why Agostino Barbarigo would have had to celebrate the long-planned annexation of Cyprus and how this pride is shown in the references to the island in two of the four fireplaces by the Lombardo workshop in the Doge's apartment.
