Resumen de Rembrandt's "Allegory of the Phoenix"

Patricia Anne Emison

  • The writer suggests that Dürer may have provided the source for the halo effects behind the bird in Rembrandt's etching The Phoenix and thus shed light on the latters allegorical meaning. The light effects in Rembrandt's work resemble in particular those of Dürer's allegorical engraving of Christ as the Sun of Righteousness on Judgement Day, the so-called Sol Iustitiae. If the two works are formally linked, then perhaps the parallel extends further and Rembrandt's work was meant as a religious allegory about the Resurrection and Judgement Day, rather than as a personal or political allegory.
