  • The writer considers the use of diagrams in the analysis of pictures in art history. He addresses the distinction between a diagram and a picture and the differences between diagrams in art and diagrams in science, using two ancient techniques of graphic inscription, the silhouette and the sundial, as examples. He suggests that visual cultures can generally be better understood if one clearly distinguishes between pictorial and diagrammatic aspects and analyzes their specific interaction.
