  • The writer discusses Jean-Baptiste Vanloo's portraits of Louis XV. He provides some biographical information about Vanloo, particularly his development as a portrait painter. He separates Vanloo's portraits of Louis XV—most of these are now lost, but can still be appreciated thanks to contemporary replicas—into different categories: the king on horseback, the king dressed in ceremonial robes, the king dressed in military armor, and parallel portraits of Louis and his wife, Princess Marie Lesczynska of Poland.
