The Tagebuch der Kulturwissenschaftlichen Bibliothek Warburg, published in 2001, contains a 1927 diary entry in which Aby Warburg addresses Diego Velázquez's painting Las Hilanderas (ca. 1657, Museo del Prado, Madrid). The entry shows that Warburg was the first to identify the two figures depicted on a carpet in the painting's background as Pallas and Arachne and the first to interpret the painting as an allegory of the art of weaving.
