  • The writer argues that Théodore Géricault's large-format painting Le Radeau de la Méduse (Raft of the Medusa, Louvre, Paris) reflects a pictorial strategy designed to evoke an emotional response in the viewer and that the roots of this strategy lie in the contemporary theory of the sublime.
