  • The writer discusses Diego Velázquez's 1618 painting Old Cook (The National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh). He suggests that the painter has created a scene, with a cook and a boy, in which to reflect upon the inspirational energy of the prophetic-imaginative person generally as well as upon the conditions of his own artistic practice.
