The writer discusses the role of windows in paintings of studio interiors produced between 1806 and 1836. Using a few paintings, by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and Ludwig Kaaz, as examples, he shows that the windows in them raise meta-artist questions about the relation between pictures and reality.
