  • An essay based on a lecture delivered at Cologne University, Germany, in 2003. The writer considers the treatment of the biblical story of the Massacre of the Innocents in the writings of Giorgio Vasari, Carel van Mander, and in the works of Rubens. She shows that a reading of Vasari and van Mander's presentations of paintings dealing with the biblical story can shed light on the work of artists such as Rubens, by, for example, helping to clarify their motivation.
