Resumen de Un "Compianto di Cristo" di Jacopo del Giallo e l'Antifonario del monastero di Santa Giustina a Padova

Martina Contin

  • A Jacopo del Giallo's "Lamentation of Christ" and the Antiphonary of Santa Giustina Monastery in Padua.

The illumination with "The Lamentation" -now part of Dr. Jörn Günther's Rare Books AG Collection- was ascribed by Gaudenz Freuler to the Bolognese illuminator Bartolomeo di Giovanni Bossi. The aim of the present article is to ascribe it to Jacopo del Giallo, a Florentine illuminator who was strongly influenced by the early sixteenth century art movements in Rome and whose work is documented in Venice since 1537. An accurate analysis of its content, handwritting, dimensions, and illumination, reveals its belonging to the "Antiphonary" for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (Rosà, Istituto di Ricerche Gemmologiche I. RI. GEM.) -which was written by Lorenzo Gadio and illuminated by Jacopo del Giallo in 1538 for the Benedictine monastery of Santa Giustina in Padua. Until now it was belived that the Antiphonary in Rosà only consisted in the liturgy for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. An in-depth analysis of the text lays bare that the final part of the Good Friday liturgy of the Antiphonary is missing. Furthermore, it includes the acephalous liturgy for Holy Saturday as well. The folio in Günther's collection fills this gap. The stylistic features of the "Lamentation" further confirm that the folio was illuminated by Jacopo del Giallo.
