  • Resumen
    • "Presbyter Nicholaus Polani", an illuminator at the Papal Court.

Among the illuminators active in Rome for the popes Pious II and Paul II, Niccolò Polani is documented in the papal registers from September 1459 to March 1471. His production, after José Ruysschaert's first investigations on the base of two manuscripts signed and dated by the artist, was enriched by other single attributions without however ever considering Niccolò's complete work and his centrality in the making of the humanistic Roman court book. The explanation of his original Paduan education has allowed us to suggest an enlargement of Polani's "corpus", particularly recognizing his antiquarian style of Mantignan background in the decoration of two Graduals for cardinal Pietro Barbo, future Paul II (ante 1464), and to point out the relevance of the transition role ha played anticipating the mature "all'antica" Roman illumination during Sisto IV's pontificate.
