  • Resumen
    • A new addition to Paduan Illumination in the first half of the thirteenth century.

This short essay dedicated to the little-known copy of the "Grammatica et Rhettorica versibus heroicis cum notis passim interlinearibus", lat. 953 ([alfa]. W. 2. 20) of the Biblioteca Estense Universitaria of Modena, whose "colophon" states that it was written in Padua in 1231. It is the first illuminated manuscript that can be referred with certainty to the city in this period and that sheds light on the local artistic context of the first half of the thirteenth century. Its decoration shows to be strongly influenced by the book decoration of San Benedetto in Polirine, an important abbey and leading center of monastic culture in the Pianura Padana area. In the calligraphic pen works, the Estense manuscript presents similar solutions with the 'old fashioned' Polironian's codex, a style that, in comparison with the rising Byzantine trend, due the recent conquest of Costantinople by the Crusaders, illlustrates the persistence of this out of date motifs.
