  • The writer discusses the sources for Nicolas Poussin's painting Triumph of Venus (circa 1635) in the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He argues that the painting represents the Triumph of Venus as she is described by Apuleius in verses from the Metamorphoses (The Golden Ass): the triumphal progress of Venus upon the sea after she bids farewell to Cupid, who has been instructed to wreak revenge upon Psyche.
