  • Resumen
    • The writer discusses Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait (1434) in London's National Gallery. The painting, which depicts a man and a woman who are probably already married, presents the promise of love and loyalty as the basis of married life. Van Eyck synthesized the iconography of the marriage painting with the iconography of the portrait of a married couple to create a picture type with no direct traditional sources. The writer discusses various aspects of the painting, in particular Van Eyck's use of the epistemological model of the mirror to explore the epistemological power of painting.
