A study of the Jan Vermeyen–designed 1549–54 Tunis series of tapestries (Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid). The writer describes this series; compares it stylistically and thematically with the Pavia series of tapestries designed by Bernaert van Orleys (Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy); and highlights the Scipio series of tapestries designed by Giulio Romano as a source for its design. He also addresses a range of issues regarding its historical background, including its political meaning for Emperor Karl V, his war campaign in Tunis, and his coronation in Bologna, Italy, in 1530 as the source for its iconography.
