  • Resumen
    • There is evidence of German involvement in the planning and design of the reconstructed Fondaco dei Tedeschi in Venice, Italy. From the early years of the 13th century, or possibly the late 12th century, this building served as the official warehouse and lodgings of the city's sizable community of German merchants. After it was destroyed by fire on January 27, 1505, the city of Venice ordered its reconstruction and called for designs from a number of architects, the winner being documented as “Hieronymo Thodescho.” Hieronymus's name was omitted from subsequent records of the project, however, and various scholars have generally rejected the idea of his ongoing involvement in it. Evidence for his possible continuous presence on the site is provided by his portrait sketch by Albrecht Dürer (Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin). This article explores various scholars' speculations about Hieronymus's origins, and it is accompanied by an appendix featuring archival documents.
