  • Resumen
    • A study of the theme of the Amazons in manuscripts and early prints of the 15th century. The writer considers Benedictine monk Sigismund Meisterlin's novel reference to the Amazons in his 1456 manuscript Augsburger Chronik—the first example of humanistic history writing in Germany—and the images of fighting Amazons used in it, which are not found in earlier illustrated manuscripts of German provenance. She then highlights the general ambivalence of the Amazon theme and the broad spectrum of interpretations illustrated by its pictorial representations in 15th-century manuscripts. She examines this iconography, arguing that the often neglected illustrations of German manuscripts of this period can substantially contribute to the contemporary reception of the texts.
