Resumen de Verwirrung, Schwindel, Herzklopfen: Januarius Zick malt das Erleuchtungserlebnis von Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Iris Wenderholm

  • A study of Januarius Zick's c. 1770–painting Rousseaus Erleuchtungserlebnis (Museum zu Allerheiligen, Schaffhausen, Germany). This work depicts French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau's experience of the Enlightenment while sitting at the foot of a tree in the park of Viciennes in 1749. In it, the painter uses the Christian visual motif of conversion, which he associates with Rousseau's moment of inspiration, transferred to the secular realm. The implications of this event for Zick's portrait of the philosopher are to be sought in the political realm and in the realm of visual propaganda.
