Carved gems from antiquity helped Michelangelo formulate the imagery that has become central to the history of Western art. Michelangelo's knowledge and use of gems can be seen in a number of his works at various points of his life, but his interest in them seemingly peaked during the years when he was working on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Rome. Here, the macrocosm he created in the central image of the Creation of Adam shows the most important rebirth of the imagery of the Tazza Farnese carved hard stone (Museo Archeologico, Naples, Italy), which was central to his interest.
