  • Resumen
    • The writer discusses Swiss painter Jean-Étienne Liotard's 1745–46 stay in Darmstadt, Germany. Liotard was a famous artist who worked internationally, but his Darmstadt stay is only hinted at in the specialist literature and often referred to in contradictory ways. Moreover, nothing is said about artistic influences and influencing, and information on painting in Darmstadt during the mid 18th century is scarce in art scholarship devoted to him. This silence can be broken by exploring the circumstances in which he failed to attract attention in a provincial town. In the process, this reveals new aspects of his life and work and also of the city's art scene, while illuminating the role of artistic fame in provincial Germany, the possible role of a “star” in 18th-century ideas of art, and the art appreciation of the elite in the Hessian province at that time and its attitude to an international artist.
