  • Resumen
    • This article discusses the paintings of the Italian artist Sebastiano del Piombo and analyzes how he depicted the Catholic cardinal Bendinello Saulis in a portrait painting he finished in 1516. Several topics are discussed, such as how the cardinal was accused of high treason by Pope Leo X in 1517 and died in prison in 1518, which caused the painting titled “Bildnis des Kardinals Bendinello Saulis mit drei Begleitern” to be largely forgotten, how the painter used painting techniques such as strategic perspectives, angles, and visually enlarging people's heads to indicate the different social ranks of his subjects, as well as how Sebastiano's iconographic depiction of cardinals contributed significantly portrait art during the renaissance.
