The article explores the history and dating of the medieval abbey church Rolduc in the Netherlands. The author reflects on Romanesque sculpture in the Meuse valley and inconsistencies between dates given in the book “Annales Rodenses” and the style of sculptures in the crypt and nave aisles. Emphasis is given to sculptural aspects of the church such as columns within the crypt, block capitals versus figurative capitals, arcade friezes, and animal imagery in the nave. Other topics include rebuilding of the crypt in the 13th-century, cushion capitals, and the trefoil form of the crypt and choir.
