  • Resumen
    • The article interprets four watercolors depicting erotic or sexual relations between men and women or human beings and animals, painted in 1933 by German expressionist painter Max Beckmann: "Raub der Europa," "Odysseus und Sirene," "Geschwister," and "Schlangenkönig und Hummerfrau." The author discusses the motifs used, drawn primarily from ancient Greek and Nordic mythology. He addresses the social and political context of Beckmann's art, especially his experience of the Great Depression, the collapse of the Weimar Republic, and the rise of the National Socialist dictatorship in Germany between 1929 and 1933. He also reflects on the representation of the human body, gender identity, and androgyny in these artworks.
