Resumen de La tribune dite des Caryatides au Louvre. Essai d'interpretation

Jean-Marie Pérouse de Montclos

  • Comments on the tribune dite des Cariatides, by Jean Goujon, in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. The tribune is sited in the wing of the Louvre built by Lescot for Henri II. The differences that have puzzled commentators between Goujon's models for the piece and the actual caryatids can be explained if the latter are not in fact caryatids; indeed, it is curious that no-one has noted that the original contract for the tribune, dated September 5, 1550, makes no mention of caryatids. The identity of the original model for the tribune remains to be found.
