Resumen de Le dessin dans la peinture vénitienne: nouvelles recherches

Michel Hochmann

  • New scientific research has shed new light on the role of drawing in Venetian painting from the Renaissance. Over the past decade or so, Renaissance Venetian painting has been the subject of several major museum exhibitions. Research carried out in preparation for these exhibitions, using such techniques as infrared reflectography, provides an increasingly clear perception of what is known as underdrawing. The remarkable images thus produced challenge traditional ideas about the distinction between drawing and color, and also the notion that, after Giorgione, Venetian painters stopped using drawings altogether. They also provide more information about the different phases in the preparation and elaboration of a painting.
