  • The dismemberment of state museum collections in France for financial reasons would be an inexcusable error. In September 2007, a planned law allowing for the sale of public collections provoked indignation among all art and archaeology lovers and professionals. The aim of the law is allegedly to reduce the cost of maintaining reserves and therefore to improve the financing of museums. However, this project would undermine a founding principle that has guaranteed the wealth and extraordinary diversity of French museum collections for over 200 years.
